~One of the facts about Macaulay Culkin people may find hardest to evaluate in the year 2002 is that he has long been one of Michael Jackson's best friends. Jackson got in touch when Macaulay was 9, after Home Alone, and they have been close ever since. Though when I raise the subject, Macaulay does make a point of noting that 'everyone always brings up Michael Jackson, and it just seems like every time I talk about him, every single syllable of what I say is always printed and all of a sudden there's a whole section of an interview dedicated to Michael Jackson', he doesn't flinch from the conversation, any of it. Whatever else is true, after the discussion below, I can't help but thinking that Macaulay Culkin himself makes a fairly impressive friend:

'It's the same as anyone else,' he begins. 'People don't really seem to understand that, like any normal person, he has friends. I've just known him for years. That's all. We're just supportive of each other. He's a kind man, he's a wonderful man, and I'm very happy that he's part of my life. And I'm very happy that, you know, he asked me to be a part of his family.'

Q: Your a godfather, right?
A: To, yeah, his children. All of them.

Q: What's your godfather role?
A: It entitles me just being cool. {Smile} Being the cool godfather, you know, who lets them get away with stuff and having absolutely no responsibility about it. I can say anything or show them anything, you know. Hopefully we'll have a continued relationship because I think they're wonderful and they're beautiful and so incredible'.

Q: Are the oldest two old enough now to really know you?
A: Yeah. He said... Michael said he just showed them my film. And now they want to go downstairs on a sled with me.

Q: They saw Home Alone?
A: Yeah, yeah. He just showed them. They're just of age to understand. He says they still don't totally get it, because I'm this big, so they're still trying to understand that I'm that nine-year-old kid.

Q: You must understand the other side of why people think it's wierd. People have... a lot of opinions about him.
A: Yeah. But, I mean, I never had that, beacuse I've known him for so long. Sure I knew of Michael Jackson when I first met him but it wasn't a huge deal. He was just a friend of mine who understood where I was coming from...

Q: Because of your fathers? Or just your general experiences in common?
A: I'm sure it was some of the father stuff, though I didn't really know it; I didn't really know the story of his father. We don't sit around telling each other horror stories about each other's lives - that's the last thing. We're just good friends. It's no big deal. People like to make a thing out of it and I don't.

Q: Um, there's no point beating around the bush. You know that a lot of people genuinely believe that he's got problems to do with kids.
A: People are going to believe what they want to believe, you know. At this point it really doesn't even really matter what the truth is. I mean, of course it does, but at the same time it's already been spun so far... it's already out of everyone's control, especially his. It was never really under his control...

Q: Well, unless he did the things he was accused of. I mean, if he did nothing that anyone's accused him of...
A: He's never done anything with me or around me or anything like that.

Q: Well, if he didn't, then it's one of the most appaling injustices...
A: Exactly.

Q: ... and if he did, it's not.
A: I think of lots of these stories, a lot of people just want them to be true. Just because it makes fantastic press.

Q: You must have been aware, as soon as people starting believing that, that you were most immediately assumed, as his most famous young friend, to somehow be...
A: ... a part of something like that?

Q: Exactly.
A: Well, no, I never was or anything like that.

Q: Which then must have been wierd for you - that what you feel is a good and nice friendship in your life is being considered in that way.
A: Exactly. I don't know. Like I said, nothing like that ever happened in front of me or anything like that. No. I just tried my best to support him through that like any good friend would.

Q: At the time, didn't your father discourage you from actively speaking out?
A: {nodding} Mmmmm-hmmm.

Q: Do you feel awkward about that?
A: Um, I mean sure I would have liked to. I understand why my father did that... but he was a friend of mine, and I wish I had done that.

Q: There was a sweet quote Michael Jackson gave a couple of years about you: 'He is Huckleberry Finn to my Tom Sawyer'.
A: Yeah, yeah. I agree with that. I was definitely the one helping him get in to mischievous trouble.' {laughing} That's what I was there for.

Q: Oh, so the truth was that you were leading him astray?
A: I guess so.

~He tells me about how, when he was young, the two of them used to sneak into movie theatres together after the films had started. I tell him it's a really sad image: these two incredibly famous people who can never see the first ten minutes of a movie. 'We just wanted to see a real movie in a real movie theatre,' he says. 'He has his own movie theatres...'
He thinks they saw Child's Play one time.

Q: Do you still feel, as you once said, that Neverland is the only place on earth you feel totally comfortable?
A: Basically, yeah... I've gone this year. I usually try to go there once or twice a year, just relax. Just unwind. Just be comfortable. I mean, it's a beautiful place, and he's very open and giving, and so thankful that he shares it with me. I just kind of go there and have a good time and just unwind.

Q: Now that you're 22, what's a good typical day in Neverland?
A: Oh, it's the same thing as when I was eight. Just doing all the crazy things that the place has to offer. Like I said, he has a movie theatre, an arcade, things like that.

Q: Do you know what he thinks about you doing this movie [side note: this question refers to the new Macaulay film 'Party Monster' in which Mac returns to the big screen playing a gay club killer]?
A: I haven't talked to him about it yet. We'll see. I'm sure me and him will have an interesting conversation about it later.

~This is the end of the Michael Jackson section of the interview.
