Acquittal boosts Jacko radio play

MICHAEL Jackson's acquittal on child sex charges last week sent US radio disc jockeys scrambling to spin his records, nearly tripling the number of his songs heard on air, monitors said today.
A jury's dramatic decision on June 13 to find the superstar not guilty of abusing a young cancer victim gave a massive boost to his flagging career - at least temporarily, said Mediabase 24/7, which monitors radio air play.
Songs by the faded King of Pop were played 3013 times on 1528 US radio stations monitored by Mediabase following his acquittal, compared to 1043 times in the three days leading up to the verdict, the company said.
"There was an absolute spike in airplay subsequent to the reading of the verdict," Mediabase 24/7's president, Rich Meyer, said in a statement.
"Only time will tell whether the increased airplay will be sustained," he said.
Mediabase said the top 10 most played Michael Jackson or Jackson Five tracks were led by Billie Jean, followed by Beat It, Rock With You, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, and Thriller.
In sixth spot was Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', followed by Bad, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), The Way You Make Me Feel and Smooth Criminal, which was in tenth place.
