Michael Jackson tells shareholders of his hopes for MDP
The National Post of 13th April published an article setting out the details of Michael Jackson's 12th April video speech to shareholders of Mark Damon's MDP Worldwide Entertainment Inc.
According to the National Post, Michael Jackson told the meeting in his video message that he can "make dreams come true in a much grander way" by working more closely with the Montreal-based company. He also said that independent producers "are close to my heart," and that "there's nothing in the world like the magic captured for ever in motion-picture images."
Michael asked Mark Damon, MDP's chief executive, to switch the company's name to Neverland Pictures or Neverland Worldwide Inc.
Neverland Pictures is the U.S. company owned by Mr. Jackson and partner-producer Raju Patel. The changeover would create a global brand name "synonymous with quality," Michael said. Explaining that the new venture would include film, commercials, and concerts, he said, "[It all] should come under this banner of great family-oriented entertainment... so let's get this done."
"I'm completely dedicated to the new Neverland and the films we'll make together must be big and spin off entire franchise industries just as George Lucas did with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. We'll create value for all shareholders."
The National Post continued: "Mr. Jackson and his Neverland promised in February to invest US$15-million to US$20-million in MDP. With that promise, MDP's share price doubled to 25¢ for a market capitalization of $40-million. It was unchanged yesterday. Mr. Damon told shareholders MDP will make the name-change when the star invests the money."
Mark Damon was quoted as telling the meeting: "We should sign the deal within two months but we're going ahead with new movies, including a US$60-million-plus blockbuster in a period setting in which Michael will play a leading role. We'll do higher-budget films and our first as Neverland will be The I Inside starring Ryan Philippe. The deal will help us integrate vertically and a music venture is possible."
The National Post added: "Mr. Jackson will be a full partner, shareholder, producer, actor or director. Already MDP has received offers of finance from all over the world. MDP and Mr. Jackson are planning such films as Wolfed (inspired by An American Werewolf in London), Plastic Man and Arabian Nights.
An industry source told the National Post: "It's hard to quantify the impact of the Neverland investment now, but Mr. Damon has proven he can generate real earnings from film-making and distribution, laying off the risks and controlling costs."
