Fermiamo Pechino, aiutiamo gli animali!

Il 6 ottobre a Shanghai, una delle più importanti città della Cina, in occasione di un festival sulla cultura spagnola, si terranno delle corride in pieno stile spagnolo, invitando tre matadores dalla Spagna e importando alcuni tori dal Messico.

Già lo scorso aprile le autorità cinesi cercarono di organizzare delle corride in un distretto di Pechino, ma in seguito all'intervento degli animalisti che protestarono inviando e-mail da tutto il mondo, le corride non si svolsero.

E' importante che ancora una volta, da tutto il mondo, vengano espressi lo sdegno e la contrarietà per una simile iniziativa.

Vi chiediamo quindi di inviare il testo sottostante all'indirizzo e-mail letters@animalsasia.org, dell'associazione Animal Asia Foundation, che le inoltrerà al Governo Cinese, e di diffondere in ogni modo questa protesta.

Dear Sir/Madam,

On behalf of LAV Lega Anti Vivisezione (Italian Anti Vivisection League) and the Animals Asia Foundation, we appeal to you for the urgent cancellation of the proposed bullfight to be held on 6th October at the Shanghai Stadium as part of the "Amazing Spain, Shanghai 2004".



As Beijing prepares for the 2008 Olympic Games we urge China's leaders to consider the negative impacts of importing such a barbaric practice, which is fast becoming a shameful embarrassment in the countries of its birth.



In a growing trend which just this April saw the city of Barcelona's Municipal Assembly voting to outlaw bullfights (and which sees escalating anti-bullfighting sentiments across Spain and Portugal), whole towns and communities are calling for the end of a practice which casts a shadow on their colourful culture and history.

Today, both countries are witnessing a massive rejection of this cruel ritual, as locals and tourists alike turn their backs against the torture of animals in fiestas and public spectacles.



Similarly in China, it is passionately believed by local animal welfare groups and members of the public that the deliberate infliction of pain and suffering to animals has no place either in the arena of entertainment or in China's rich and respected culture.

As an ugly, abhorrent and outdated practice, bullfighting has no cultural relevance to China and cannot be excused under the banner of pageantry and entertainment, when it clearly promotes the public torture, suffering and humiliation of a living creature.



We implore you, as leaders of Shanghai's wonderful, progressive and civilised city, which will also be under the spotlight during the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, to show your leadership in compassion and humane awareness and ban this disgraceful event.
