Michael Jackson Takes On Acting And Edgar Allan Poe Role
Wed Aug 28,12:57 PM ET

(8/28/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- Michael Jackson will reportedly portray suspense writer Edgar Allan Poe in a new film based on the tortured final days of the famed author, who died in 1849. The project--titled The Nightmare Of Edgar Allan Poe--has been in development for some time, and producer Gary Pudney told Access Hollywood earlier this week that he and Jackson are currently working to get a producer for the film.

Pudney claimed that Jackson is so excited about the project that he's gone and enlisted an acting coach, saying, " Marlon Brando is his acting teacher--he's a very good friend of his."

Jackson recently had a cameo in the summer film Men In Black II, and director Barry Sonnenfeld told LAUNCH, "He really wanted to be in the movie and we had many discussions, Michael and I, on the phone about what his role would be 'cause I kept not figuring out how he could be in the movie, but Will (Smith) thought it would be really cool for him to be in the movie."

Jackson told Sonnenfeld he wanted a through line in the film and asked to be in as many scenes as possible, but the director told Jackson. "'You know, the script's written already and there's no through lines, and I would love for you to be in the movie but you can't have a through line.' And then he asked if he could be in many scenes and I said he couldn't. And then he said, 'Could I wear the suit?' and I said, 'Yes.' So once I said he could wear the suit, then he was really excited about being in the movie."

Jackson has only a few lines in Men In Black II in a scene that lasts for only a couple of minutes. The shot shouldn't have been difficult or time consuming, but Sonnenfeld told LAUNCH Jackson took his small role quite seriously. "Michael came in and I said, 'Michael, stand here. Let's see how we're gonna light you, and you got the script--you know the words. This is a blue screen. We'll be putting something in later and why don't you...This is great, you got what you need, Greg?' I said to the cinematographer, OK, this is great, so we'll see you about 35 minutes? Yeah.' Michael says, 'Well, we need to talk about the scene.' So I said, 'Well, you got the script.' He goes, 'No, Barry please, can we?' So I go, 'OK.'"
