For Fox, Michael Jackson Unreels Some 'Home Movies'

The May sweeps is just around the corner, and you know what that means:

Another Michael Jackson special!

And this time we get to see:

Michael Jackson's home movies!

"Michael Jackson's Private Home Movies" will set the tone for the May sweeps, because Fox is going to air it on the very first night of the ratings derby, April 24.

"Leaving behind the glitz and glamour of film, music videos and television, Michael Jackson opens up his private home movie collection, giving unprecedented access to thousands of hours of never-before-seen footage revealing his real life, family and friends," Fox said in its news release.

Are you as creeped out as I am?

"Michael Jackson's Private Home Movies" is being executive-produced by Brad Lachman. Lachman was also the executive producer of "Michael Jackson Take 2: The Interview They Wouldn't Show You" -- the special Fox aired during the February sweeps. Jackson had commissioned that two-hour piece to rebut the British documentary "Living With Michael Jackson" that ABC had aired two weeks earlier.

In "Living With Michael Jackson," British journalist Martin Bashir allowed Jackson to make himself look very, very bad when he freely discussed his ongoing habit of inviting children to whom he is not related to attend sleepovers in his bed. Jackson's explanation to Bashir about dangling his youngest child off a Berlin balcony also ranked high on the ick-o-meter.

The ABC documentary snagged a whopping 27 million viewers; Fox's rebuttal averaged 14 million -- the network's biggest Thursday audience in four years.

April 24 is also a Thursday; Fox noted that its newsmag "The Pulse" will be preempted on that night only. The next week we will all be thrilled to see it return. Go figure.

NBC actually started the whole If It's Sweeps It Must Be Michael Jackson thing.In January it announced that NBC News would air a special February sweeps edition of "Dateline" called "Michael Jackson Unmasked," focusing on how the evolution of Jackson's face paralleled milestones in his career.

But Jackson created his own personal nightmare when he was photographed and shown on television during a rare courtroom appearance in November, looking for all the world like he'd had one nose job too many. The eyeliner on his eyes only drew attention to the bandage-type plaster on his scarred nose, and some plastic surgeons said it appeared the singer's nose had collapsed from too many surgeries.

. . . and while U.S. troops were busy toppling the Saddam Hussein regime Tuesday night, Cher was marching through prime time, leaving ratings destruction in her wake.

"Cher: The Farewell Tour" amassed a crowd of about 17 million viewers from 9 to 11 p.m., defeating all time-period foes in overall viewers and the 18-to-49-year-olds that NBC targets. It's the most watched concert special of the season among 18-to-49-year-olds. And Cher is 56 years old. Let NBC do the math.

"The Cherest Show on Earth," as Cher called her farewell tour, is the most watched concert special since November 2001, when Michael Jackson's reunion with his older, more normal, brothers averaged a whopping 26 million viewers.

Cher especially wanted her farewell special to show up "J. Lo and Britney and all those young girls who are coming to take, well, not my place but -- somebody's place."

That happened. J. Lo's concert special for NBC, in fall 2001, only snagged about 12 million viewers, and that highly hyped HBO Britney Spears concert in November 2001 clocked a measly 5 million viewers.

Cher also stomped on Celine Dion, whose odd-and-not-in-a-good-way "Celine Dion in Las Vegas" concert special on CBS last month had been this season's most watched of the genre, with nearly 14 million viewers.

Cher even beat Cher's own super-hyped HBO concert special, which registered only about 6 million viewers back in August 1999. That's about 11 million shy of Tuesday's NBC concert -- such is the power of broadcast TV.

"Cher: The Farewell Tour" is NBC's most watched entertainment program in the Tuesday 9-to-11-p.m. time slot since Oct. 24, 2000. Of course, when you consider some of the junk that NBC has put on Tuesday night this season, that statement loses some of its impact.

Cher's numbers are impressive, however, given how some of this season's other much-touted concert specials have fared: Faith Hill (NBC), 11.3 million; Dixie Chicks (NBC), 11.1 million; Paul McCartney (ABC), 8.1 million; Bruce Springsteen (CBS), 5.4 million; U2 (CBS), 3.6 million.

....magari nell' attesa di un nuovo album questi special non sono male no?? O volete che sia come tra il '97 e il 2001 in cui ha fatto solo un concerto a monaco nel'99 ed è letteralmente scomparso?? Le attese sono logoranti, almeno ci consoliamo con qualche immagine nuova...questo di certo non influisce con la lavorazione dell' album, se ci deve mettere 6 anni ce li metterà comunque, indiendentemente da questi special..

...si, sempre più personaggio che comunque lo aiuta a vendere i dischi...e intanto di qualcosa di nuovo fa uscire questi special.. a me non dispiacciono, meglio del nulla assoluto

Anche Mike ha bisogno di soldi e deve comportarsi anche da uomo d'affari... L'ultimo special Takes Two gli ha fruttato 20 milioni di dollari, senza fare letteralmente nulla... ora gli stessi produttori gli avranno proposto di replicare il successo e il guadagno con un altro special, come rifiutare?
Aggiugiamo una buona dose di autocelebrazione e narcisismo e capiamo perchè Mike fa uscire questo special...

Poi Mike vuole che si parli di lui, non raccontiamoci storie... che vuole essere lasciato in pace... se davvero non ci fosse più della pubblicità sui Tabloid cosa farebbe per promuoversi? dovrebbe spendere sempre di tasca sua?

a me più che raschiare il fondo del barile, sembra che Mike cerchi di alzare un pò il velo di mistero, e di far capire a chi non lo ama chi è veramente!!!
Io ho sentito tanti pareri "negativi" dopo LWMJ ma erano più della serie, <> tant'è che dopo quello special in Italia si è ricominciato a sentire molto di più MJ! pensate se passasse il T2!!
