Cecilia Bartoli è la più famosa interprete odierna di musica classica, con milioni di dischi venduti negli ultimi 20 anni, è una delle stelle della lirica.
A fine 2009 fece uscire Sacrificium, un'opera dedicata alle famose "hit" dei castrati del 19°secolo.
Naturalmente nessuno sa come cantavano i castrati, quindi il risultato è molto particolare, in quanto queste liriche sono cantate con voce femminile.
L'intervistatrice dice che sente MJ nelle sue interpretazioni, che è quasi un album di MJ.
Cecilia ammette di avere pensato a MJ mentre rifiniva l'album e aggiunge che Michael era un talento immenso e un vero genio della musica. Dice che come i castrati è una vittima della società che richiede il sacrifico del proprio corpo, basti pensare alle mutilazioni che si è autoinflitto. Come i castrati Michael apparteneva ad una famiglia povera e piena di figli, e uno di questi veniva sacrificato in nome della musica, dell'arte e dei soldi (per la famiglia).
I castrati erano le superstar dell'epoca, ma il loro dramma li rendeva degli isolati ed incompresi, e il loro dolore e sofferenza veniva riversato nella loro arte.

“Most of these young boys were coming from very, very poor families, which they already have 10 to 12 children,” Bartoli says, again making a parallel with Jackson, “one would sacrifice, in the name of music, but in fact it was big business because if this boy was able to make a career he was considered a pop star and he was earning lots of money and he was the one who could have saved his family out of poverty.”

Bartoli says that even the lucky few castrati who became stars also suffered a great deal psychologically. Because of this, Bartoli feels that the music they sang contains more complex emotions: “Because every castrato had this psychological drama…they had the capability to translate the drama, their own drama in the music.
